Interesting Number Puzzle, but I'm Stuck

Head on over to Think Again, for Jan's latest puzzle. No one's been commenting, and I'm curious what other people think of this.

  2. This is a classic puzzle! I have some stuff I've used it along with at various times, so send me an email if you want to see those handouts and maybe get some ideas.

I'm trying to think of how to give hints without spoiling things too much. Maybe a small one would be to focus more on thinking about the powers of 10 and relating them to the number you are working with, instead of focusing on your number and relating it to the powers of 10.

  3. Thank you, Cindy! I saw your mention of my blog (at the top of your in-no-particular-order list) just before I saw this. I'll see if I can accept it (composing a list of 15 special blogs will take me a while).

Thank you, Josh! I was pretty sure my first approach was a dead end, but haven't moved on yet. I'm just going to let it percolate for a while, and hopefully come back to it later.

  4. Cool! I had not seen this particular puzzle before, although I've seen similar things in the past. I'm quite confident that a brute-force approach will NOT help, as the solution I found for 2011 has quite a few digits...
