Althea's Math Mysteries is a series of four young adult novels with math at the center. I'm writing them because I think learning math in the context of a story can be a more engaging experience than through a textbook. I've found that doing math while reading a story makes me feel a bit like I'm doing it along with the characters, and doing math with friends is great. (My two favorites are Math Girls and Surreal Numbers.)
While writing these books, it has been exciting to notice how much of my 30-plus years of experience teaching math shows up in the way Mom (one of the characters) works with Althea and her friends. Today I collected my favorites from the first book, Althea and the Mystery of the Imaginary Numbers.
[Sadly google doesn't support these blogs well, and there seems to be no way to properly format my list here. So here's a link.]
If you enjoyed thinking about these Teaching Gems, you might like reading Althea's stories to help you think about how you want to teach math. Email me at altheasmathmysteries@gmail.com if you'd like to be an early reader (and help me with your feedback).
